Is there such as thing as a Male Yeast Infection?

Male yeast infection is not a myth. Learn the symptoms, causes, and treatment for this common male ailment.

Attention men: Would you know the signs of a penile yeast infection if it bit you? And, while these infections are caused by fungi, you won't be a fun guy while you have one. Here's an inside look at what causes this uncomfortable condition and what you can do about it.

Just like in a female, penile yeast infection is caused by an overabundance of the Candida yeast. These yeast spores are present in all humans and they usually behave themselves. However, when a bunch of them get out of control penile yeast infection can be the result.

Although a discharge is unusual, symptoms can include penile irritation, rash or small bumps which may be accompanied by a bad odor. Although it is possible to acquire the disease from an infected sexual partner, most cases of male yeast infection come from the over use of antibiotics.

If you have any of the symptoms of penile yeast infection it is best to see a doctor at once. Many of these symptoms can also be caused by more serious sexually transmitted diseases and you'll want to know if this is the case.

Depending upon the severity of the penile yeast infection, your doctor may prescribe an anti fungal cream that you rub into the infected area or, in more severe cases, you may have to take some potent oral anti fungal medicine such as Diflucan or Nizoral. Because these oral drugs can cause liver inflammation, you should let your doctor know if you have any liver problems.

Sex during a penile yeast infection should be avoided even if you are wearing a condom. Not only is the ejaculation likely to be painful, but you run the risk of infecting your partner and that's not a nice thing to do!

You can lessen the chance of getting a male yeast infection to begin with by drying your penis well after bathing or showering, avoiding underwear made of synthetic fiber that does not allow air to circulate through your crotch, and removing damp and sweaty clothing such as wet bathing suits, and sweaty gym shorts, as soon as possible.

A male yeast infections isn't life-threatening but it will keep you out of "action" until it heals. Pay attention to your body's needs and try not to get one in the first place.
